Pin-tailed Whydah
4x12” on paper
Day 8 of my birdtober challenge to paint one bird for every day of October.
These study paintings helped me explore various birds found around the world. Daily painting practice always to helps refine skill and improve observation. I enjoyed becoming more familiar with these beautiful birds. I practiced implementing a balance of accuracy, and creation of art through value, just enough detail, and loose brushwork of water and colour. My hope is that they bring the outdoors inside your home and instill a love and reverence for God’s incredible creations.
Each painting is 4x6”, painted on 140lb watercolour paper. However, this particular bird study is special! Due to the nature of the Bearded Reedling’s long tail, I wanted to make an elongated proportion to accommodate that exquisite tail! I doubled the height of the other paintings, making it 4x12”!
Here are some Pin-tailed Whydah facts for you to enjoy….
Location: Sub-Saharan Africa.
Length: 12-13 cm (male tail can add up to 20 cm during breeding season).
Lifespan: About 5-6 years.
Fun Fact: Males have a remarkable long tail during the breeding season, used in elaborate courtship displays.
